Vegetarians, rejoice: The Chicago Diner is branching out.

Due to an influx of diners traveling from Logan Square and neighboring areas to its original location at 3411 N. Halsted, vegan/vegetarian staple The Chicago Diner plans to open a second location this fall in the recently vacated Logan Square Kitchen space at 2333 N. Milwaukee.

While the new restaurant is slightly larger than the flagship Lakeview location, the necessary steps have been taken to guarantee the building has a low environmental impact, earning the restaurant a Gold Leed certification through innovations including motion and voice activated lighting, automated hood systems in the kitchen and ecological plumbing fixtures for reduced water usage, according to general manager Michael Hornick.

"This specific location fits us very well as the owner of the building has gone to great lengths to ensure it has the smallest ecological footprint possible," Hornick said.

Using recycled and re-purposed building materials found throughout Chicago, the bigger space will also mean greater flexibility to handle larger groups, and restaurant-goers can expect to see a 11-seat counter/bar that fits in with the modern-day diner feel.  

"As a business and life practice it is important for us to make decisions that are environmentally responsible and sustainable," Hornick said. "We are very proud to be able to continue our growth in the same manners that we have been practicing for nearly 30 years."

Chicago Diner lovers can also expect the same menu items they've been experiencing for almost 30 years, offering favorites such as vegan milkshakes and vegetarian comfort foods.

"We like to offer vegan/vegetarian versions of the food that we remember growing up with," Hornick said. "We will continue to create exciting new specials and change our menu at seasonal times throughout the year."
