Uncle Fun, a popular Lakeview toy store known for its quirky tricks and trinkets, plans to close its doors Jan. 26, the store has announced.
The store at 1338 W. Belmont Ave. has been around for more than three decades and sells everything from Pez people to Wonder Woman figurines.
On Saturday, the store posted on Facebook that owner Ted Frankel is retiring and will move to Baltimore with his husband, whom Frankel said is a cabinet member for the Baltimore mayor.
The two married in September so moving to Baltimore was a tough but natural decision, Frankel said in an interview Wednesday.
“I really didn't realize I've touched as many people as I have,” Frankel said. “It's lots of hugs and tears and lots of bargains leaving.”
The store has increased its inventory and slashed prices by 50 percent or more, Frankel said. He plans to increase the discounts as the store nears its closing date.
Frankel also owns Sideshow, an art and toy store in the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. That store will remain in business, he said.
