Police: Cop shoots man driving toward officers

Police shot and wounded a man after he threw his car in reverse and sped toward officers in the Wicker Park neighborhood, officials said.

The officers had been called to the 1500 block of North Hoyne Avenue around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday after the man struck several vehicles and then tried to flee, according to Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

When the officers arrived, people were chasing the driver of a large dark-colored car, Camden said.

The driver revved the engine, apparently having trouble getting into gear, and then backed into another vehicle, Camden said.  The man, believed to be in his 20s, refused to get out of the car even after officers used pepper spray, he said.

The man backed the car into a building, then began driving in reverse toward two police officers and people gathered nearby, Camden said.

"Police are trying to get him out of the car," Camden said. "There's a crowd of people standing on the street. He is now heading towards the people standing on the street."

A police officer fired his gun from the driver's side of the vehicle, hitting the man in the leg, Camden said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in good condition, he said.

The officer had feared for the safety of the people in the crowd and the other officer, Camden said. "He (the driver) was acting extremely belligerent and totally unreasonable," he said.

No other injuries were reported.

Police blocked streets in the area after the shooting, including a stretch of North Avenue extending several blocks west from the Damen Blue Line stop.
