Eight people are in custody after a disturbance in the Avalon Park neighborhood left several officers with minor injuries Tuesday evening, police said.
The disturbance broke out about 7:10 p.m. at a demonstration in the 7900 block of South Avalon Avenue, Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Several officers were struck by thrown objects and received minor injuries, Gaines said. Police declined to release the number of officers injured.
Two officers were also hurt when their squad car crashed as they responded to a 10-1, an alert broadcast over the air indicating that officers at the disturbance needed help.
Both officers hurt in the crash were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center with minor injuries.
Charges against the eight people taken into custody are pending, Gaines said.
