Northwestern Memorial Hospital ranked No. 10 in an annual list of the best hospitals in the nation, as compiled by U.S. News and World Report.

The rankings cover nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide. Scoring takes death rates and patient safety in account. The top spot in the list went to Mayo Clinic, with 29 points. Northwestern earned 13, right below Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which had 15.

Northwestern, an 885-bed hospital with more than 51,000 admissions, said in a statement it was grateful of the recognition and proud of its physicians, nurses and staff.

By specialty, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago ranked number one, Followed by Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey and TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston.

Locally, Northwestern also earned the top spot among Illinois hospitals, followed by Rush University Medical Center and Advocate Christ Medical Center.
