A 49-year-old man was pronounced dead this morning after being pulled out of the water near Montrose Beach, officials said.
The man, who is from Chicago, was swimming about 25 feet from the shore when people noticed him in distress and then saw him go under water, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.
Officials from the Chicago Fire Department were called to the area at about 8:30 a.m. where they recovered the man from the water, Estrada said.
The man was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:03 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
He was identified as Hassan Alshwailty of the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue, according to the office. An autopsy was inconclusive.Copyright © 2015, RedEye
