A Chicago public schools teacher is in custody after threatening students at the South Side school where he taught before being fired Wednesday, according to police and school officials.

The teacher was arrested at his home on the Northwest Side today after school officials told police that the man had threatened students at Schmid Elementary School, 9755 S. Greenwood Ave., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

Police were told this morning that someone had heard the teacher make a threat to students on Wednesday afternoon, Mirabelli said.

This morning police increased security at the school and checked identification for anyone going into the building, Mirabelli said.

Jefferson Park district tactical officers went to the man's home on the Northwest Side this morning and took the man into custody, Mirabelli said.

According to school officials the man was fired on Wednesday. The school was on lock-down this morning and no injuries were reported, according to a statement from the Chicago Public School District.

Officials said the man was fired for poor performance.
