A gas station attendant was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in a robbery on the South Side in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office idenfied the 31-year-old man as Jojo James of the 4800 block of North Ridgeway Avenue. He was pronounced dead at 2:58 p.m. at Stroger Hospital, the spokeswoman said.

Police initially received a call about 12:50 p.m. alerting them to someone being beaten at a gas station at 43rd and State streets, said Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

Soon after, more calls came in reporting a robbery in progress. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an employee who had been shot, he said.

The man had been taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital with two gunshot wounds, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The robber or robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in an unknown direction. Police are canvassing the area looking for suspects and seeking witnesses to the crime.
