CTA requests Red Line artist bids

The CTA on Tuesday issued a bid for artists to apply to create artwork at the Wilson Red Line stop and eight South Side stations undergoing renovation.

Paperwork, available on transitchicago.com, is due July 18. The CTA shuttered the South Side stations last month to overhaul Red Line track in a five-month project.

Many of these stations, between Cermak-Chinatown and 87th Street, already have artwork but a CTA spokeswoman said the new art will complement the older works.

Artwork will be procured separately for the 95th Street station, which will undergo a rebuild starting next year.

The CTA announced community meetings about the public art are set for 6 p.m., June 27, at Greater Harvest Missionary Baptist Church, 5141 S. State St.; and 1 p.m., July 10 at Chinatown Library, 2353 S. Wentworth Ave.

Meanwhile, work on the Wilson station, which will be made into a transfer station for the Purple Line, is expected to begin this year. The meeting about art at the Wilson stop will be held at 6 p.m., July 2, at Weiss Memorial Hospital Auditorium, 4646 N. Marine Dr.

The CTA made the announcement Tuesday while announcing the winning bids to create artwork for seven North Side Red Line stations that saw facelifts last year. That artwork is expected to be installed next year.
