CTA provides extra service for Lollapalooza

The CTA is providing extra weekend service for Lollapalooza and a Bears event, the transit agency announced Thursday.

The CTA on Friday will operate longer trains on the Blue, Brown, Green, Orange and Red lines until at least 10 p.m., and longer trains and more frequent service Saturday and Sunday until 10 p.m. or later. Lollapalooza begins Friday and runs through Sunday night.

Also, nine bus routes will be detoured until noon Wednesday because of street closures in the Grant Park area for Lollapalooza. The affected routes are the Nos. 2-Hyde Park Express, 6-Jackson Park Express, 7-Harrison, 10-Museum of Science & Industry, J14-Jeffery Jump, 26-South Shore Express, 126-Jackson, 143-Stockton/Michigan Express and 147-Outer Drive Express.

This will be the first Lollapalooza where riders can use Ventra to pay for their fares. The CTA recommends that riders load money or passes onto their Ventra cards online at to avoid long lines at stations. CTA ridership data shows that the O'Hare Blue Line station is extra busy Lollapalooza weekend with riders who have flown in from out of town.

Riders also can use some personal bank cards and some phones to pay CTA fares. Cash is accepted on buses.

Meanwhile, the CTA is also providing additional bus service on the Nos. 146-Inner Drive/Michigan Express and 130-Museum Campus routes for Chicago Bears Family Fest at Soldier Field on Saturday. Outdoor festivities begin at 3 p.m., and gates open at 5 p.m.
