As if commuting in the summer wasn't annoying enough, thanks to clueless tourists and extra traffic—summer is also detour season.
Between neighborhood and city-sponsored festivals and construction projects that shut down streets, buses are being rerouted all over town—leaving some riders to embark on a scavenger hunt for their ride. The prize? Frustration.
The latest set of reroutes will occur downtown. Beginning July 5, Wacker Drive between Washington and Monroe Streets will close to traffic for the second stage of the Wacker Drive construction project, which will affect 14 bus routes.
CTA workers will be downtown today alerting riders about service changes.
The impacted routes:
>> No. 11-Lincoln/Sedgwick>> No. 121-Union/Wacker Express
>> No. 14-Jeffery Express>> No. 122-Illinois Center/Ogilvie Express
>> No. 19-United Center Express>> No. 123-Illinois Center/Wacker Express
>> No. 20-Madison>> No. 124-Navy Pier
>> No. 56-Milwaukee>> No. 125-Water Tower Express
>> No. 60-Blue Island/26th>> No. 129-West Loop/South Loop
>> No. 120-Ogilvie/Wacker Express>> No. 157-Streeterville/Taylor
Riders of these routes should be used to detours. The first stage of the project, the closure of Wacker Drive between Randolph and Washington Streets, began in January and affected 13 of those bus routes.
Also downtown, the CTA is rerouting six buses until July 4 because of street closures near Grant Park for theTaste of Chicago.
The affected routes are the No. 2-Hyde Park Express, No. 6-Jackson Park Express, No. 10-Museum of Science and Industry, No. 14-Jeffery Express, No. 26-South Shore Express and No. X28 Stony Island Express.
On top of that, the CTA debuted new bus schedules last week and new rail schedules on June 12. Most of the nearly 150 bus routes saw new timetables.
The CTA adjusts schedules several times each year to account for seasonal ridership patterns.
So season's greetings—this summer will be a-maze-ing.
My pledge to ride every CTA bus line continues. I rode the No. 78-Montrose last week and boiled my review down to a tweet.
@tracyswartz 55 min from Harlem Irving Plaza to Clarendon Park. Long wait. Stops by Montrose Brown and Blue, Wilson Red and Truman and Wright Colleges.
113 routes down, 26 to go!
