A water main break near the Grand Avenue Blue Line subway stop forced the closure of the stop this evening as crews dealt with the break and flooding, a CTA spokeswoman said.

The stop was reopened about 10 p.m. after being closed about 7:35 p.m. as parts of the mezzanine and platform areas of the stop flooded because of the break, said CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski. Until about midnight, passengers can only enter and exit the station at the Halsted Street entrance to the station.

Trains traveling in both directions bypassed the station for more than two hours.

Streets in the area flooded following the break near Grand and Halsted, which may have taken place because of freezing of an old water main from the 1930s, Water Department spokesman Tom LaPorte told WGN-TV. City crews are trying to fix the main so that the intersection will be clear for the morning commute, he said.

Passengers who usually board at Grand are being asked to take the No. 56/Milwaukee Avenue bus.
