Two high school classmates are accused of beating up a CTA bus driver Friday morning on the South Side because one of their fare cards had insufficient funds.

Prosecutors said Kendall M. Henderson held the driver down while Darryl D. Payne punched the 50-year-old man in the head, causing pain and swelling.

The attack happened after the two 19 year olds boarded the bus at 7300 S. Jeffrey Blvd. in the South Shore neighborhood, according to police.

The teens, who in their arrest reports are listed as students at Chatham Academy Charter High School, were found by officers near the crime scene. Prosecutors said the assault was captured on video.

Payne, of the 7300 block of South Clyde Avenue, and Henderson, of the 7200 block of South Ridgeland Avenue, each were charged felony charges of aggravated battery to a transit employee.

In bond court Saturday, Cook County Associate Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered both men released on an individual recognizance bond with electronic monitoring. They’ll return to court Friday.

Among the evidence police seized after arresting the men: Ventra cards.
