A 14-year-old boy who jumped onto the Blue Line train tracks died this afternoon after he touched the third rail on the CTA Blue Line tracks, police said.
He jumped down on a dare from friends and touched the rail when trying to get back up, police said.
Power to a portion of the CTA Blue Line was turned off briefly this afternoon after the person was on the tracks at the Illinois Medical District station, officials said.
CTA officials cut power to both incoming and outgoing Blue Line trains between the Kedzie/Homan and Racine stations, according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski.
The power was turned off at about 3:20 p.m. and was reactivated 15 minutes later after Chicago Fire Department personnel were able to remove the person from the tracks, Hosinski said. Trains were running again soon after that.
The boy was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, where he later died, officials said. Police have launched a death investigation, O'Brien said.
