A CTA bus driver suffered a medical emergency and died while behind the wheel of a bus midday Tuesday, officials said.

The driver was identified as Larry Johnson, 55, of the 200 block of Washington Boulevard in Oak Park, authorities said. He was declared dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 12:24 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The northbound bus had departed the 63rd Street terminal and the driver stopped the vehicle at Kedzie Avenue and 55th Street when the driver suffered an apparent seizure, CTA spokesman Brian Steele said.

No passengers were on board when CTA personnel arrived on scene, Steele said. It was not known whether any passengers were on bus at the time of incident, he said.

The driver began to feel ill and pulled over about 11:45 a.m., after which he was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss.
