Two women were killed in homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
A 37-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car Sunday in the 1100 block of North Mason Avenue in Austin, according to officials. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide.
Three days earlier, a 24-year-old woman was shot to death in the 6600 block of South Stony Island Avenue in Woodlawn, police said.
Female homicide victims account for about 12 percent of the 386 homicide victims this year, as of Wednesday afternoon.
Last year, female homicide victims represented about 9 percent of the 519 homicide victims, according to RedEye data.
Citywide, gunshot homicides were logged in the last week in Chatham, Lincoln Square, New City and South Lawndale, RedEye determined.
Twenty homicides have been recorded so far this month. Thirty-eight homicides were logged in November 2012, RedEye determined.
