South Shore saw two homicides in the last week, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data.
On Saturday, a 9-month-old boy who lived in the 7100 block of South Bennett Avenue was admitted to the hospital with injuries believed to be from child abuse, police said. He later died.
Two days earlier, a 17-year-old boy was shot to death in the 7000 block of South Stony Island Avenue, according to officials.
South Shore has logged 23 homicides so far this year. The South Side community area recorded 20 homicides last year, RedEye determined.
In the last week, gunshot homicides were logged in Englewood, Kenwood and Woodlawn, according to police information.
Meanwhile, there were two stabbing deaths in the last week. An 18-year-old man was stabbed to death Monday in the 6500 block of South Kilpatrick Avenue, and a 45-year-old woman was fatally stabbed Friday in the 1100 block of North Mayfield Avenue in Austin.
On Sept. 26, a 4-month-old boy was beaten to death in the 6000 block of South Honore Street in West Englewood, officials said.
September ended this week with 41 homicides, down from 44 homicides in September 2012, RedEye determined.
One homicide has been recorded so far this month. Forty-one homicides were logged in October 2012, according to RedEye data.
