Edgewater and Woodlawn each saw two homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
In Woodlawn, an 18-year-old man was shot to death on Feb. 23 in the 800 block of East 63rd Street, officials said. The next day, a 25-year-old man was fatally shot in the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, police said.
Woodlawn has seen three homicides so far this year. The community area recorded eight homicides last year, according to RedEye data.
Meanwhile in Edgewater, two men, ages 33 and 37, were found stabbed to death Saturday in the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue, officals said.
So far this year, Edgewater has seen three homicides--all stabbings. Of the 12 homicides the community area has seen since January 2008, half of the cases were fatal stabbings. Typically in Chicago, about 7 percent of homicides yearly are fatal stabbings, according to RedEye data.
Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in Auburn Gresham, Brighton Park, Englewood, Humboldt Park and Roseland in the last week, RedEye determined.
February ended last month with 23 homicides, down from 24 homicides recorded in February 2010, RedEye found.
So far March has seen two homicides. Thirty-one homicides were recorded in March of last year, RedEye determined.
