Three women were among the 11 people shot and killed in Chicago in the past week, representing an uptick in female homicide victims, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
An 84-year-old woman was fatally shot Tuesday in the 900 block of West 31st Street in Bridgeport, police said. Two days earlier, a 29-year-old woman was shot and killed in the 400 block of West 104th Street in Roseland, according to officials.
On Saturday, a 16-year-old girl was fatally shot in the 7200 block of South Laflin Street in West Englewood, police said. The Bridgeport and Roseland cases were domestic while the West Englewood incident was a drive-by shooting, police said.
There have been 33 female homicide victims so far this year, comprising 13.1 percent of 251 homicide victims, according to RedEye data.
Last year, there were 52 female victims, comprising 11.8 percent out of 440 homicide victims. In 2012, there were 49 female victims, comprising 9.4 percent of the 522 homicide victims, RedEye determined.
In the past week, gunshot homicides were logged in Auburn Gresham, Douglas, East Garfield Park, Humboldt Park, South Deering and South Shore, according to police information.
On Saturday, there was a double homicide in Logan Square. A 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old man were fatally shot in the 2300 block of North Springfield Avenue, police said.
Logan Square, which had about 72,800 residents counted in the 2010 Census, has loose borders of Diversey Avenue on the north, Bloomingdale Avenue on the south, the Chicago River on the east and Metra Milwaukee District tracks on the west.
Logan Square has logged six homicides so far this year, tied with Grand Boulevard, Greater Grand Crossing, New City, Rogers Park and West Pullman for the 14th highest toll among Chicago's 77 community areas. The Northwest Side community area recorded five homicides last year, up from two homicides in 2012, according to RedEye data.
Citywide, 26 homicides have been logged so far this month. Fifty-three homicides were recorded in August 2013, RedEye determined.Copyright © 2015, RedEye
