Chicago last week recorded its 50th homicide of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
A 39-year-old woman was shot Wednesday in the 8800 block of South May Street in Auburn Gresham, police said. She died Friday, according to officials.
Chicago recorded its 50th homicide in 2013 on Feb. 12; in 2012 on Feb. 16; and in 2011 on Feb. 26, according to RedEye data.
Homicides are down 19 percent this year versus 2013, 38 percent compared to 2012 and 20 percent versus 2011, RedEye determined.
Chicago police say the city last year saw its lowest homicide total (415 killings) since 1965. RedEye counted 435 homicides, a tally that includes killings the police deemed to have been done in self defense.
