A 54-year-old woman was charged with stabbing her 45-year-old girlfriend to death in the Austin neighborhood early Friday morning after a verbal argument over another woman, prosecutors said.
Shounya Burnett, 45, was pronounced dead about 1:20 a.m. She had been stabbed in the forehead, four times in the face and twice in the neck while inside an apartment building in which they both lived on the 1100 block of North Mayfield Avenue, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Bridget O’Brien.
Burnett and Debra Jean Jones, 54, got into an argument over a woman Jones had dated before she met Burnett, O’Brien said. Jones also became angry because Burnett had broken her glasses,O’Brien said.
At least one witness was at the murder scene, and Jones has admitted that she grabbed a knife during the argument and stabbed Burnett, O’Brien said.
On Saturday, a judge set bail Cook County Judge Joseph Panarese ordered Jones held on $900,000 bail. She is charged with first-degree murder.
O’Brien said Jones and Burnett had plans to marry in October and had already purchased their wedding rings.
Jones’ next court date is Sept. firstname.lastname@example.org
