A 56-year-old man was declared brain dead this morning after being shot by a relative following an argument Wednesday in the South Shore neighborhood, authorities said.
Willie Smith, 56, of the 500 block of North Desplaines Street, was declared brain-dead at 9 a.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The victim had been in an apartment in the 1700 block of East 72nd Street about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday when he got into an argument about a gun with a woman with whom he has a domestic relationship with, said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said Friday. The woman, 52, pointed the gun at the man and pulled the trigger, hitting him in the right eye, Greer said.
The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition following the shooting.
Investigators were seeking charges against the woman, whom a source said was believed to be the victim's sister. The two had a dispute over whether the gun was capable of firing, sources said.
