A woman was shot with a rifle in the Austin neighborhood and five others were wounded in other attacks across the city overnight.

The 25-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen while standing in the street in the 200 block of North Latrobe Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood about 11:30 p.m.

Someone in a passing car leaned out and started shooting erratically, police said. The shooter also hit two homes separated by two vacant lots, one on the first floor and the other on the second floor.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was in critical condition, police said.

Two people were wounded around 9:50 p.m. -- one at 31st and Lituanica streets in the Bridgeport neighborhood and the other at 45th and Honore streets in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

The 22-year-old man shot on 31st Street was grazed in the head, and police found a single shell casing near Lituanica. The bullet also nicked a gas meter at a building where the person was standing. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.

The 26-year-old man shot near 45th and Honore was hit in the elbow. He refused medical treatment at the scene, police said.

Earlier, a 20-year-old was shot in the face in the 2700 block of West 24th Street around 4:40 p.m. Thursday, according to Police News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition, said O'Brien. Bird shot pellets fired from a shotgun were lodged in his face, police said. Police were questioning two people.

A 23-year-old man was wounded around 12:10 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of North Lavergne Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, O'Brien said.

The man suffered a wound to his buttocks and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, O'Brien said. No one was in custody and police said the man was being uncooperative. Area North detectives were investigating.
