Man shot dead on South Side

A man was fatally wounded this afternoon in a shooting on the South Side in the city's Gresham neighborhood, officials said.

About 3:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in his face on the 7700 block of South Carpenter Street. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. Chicago Fire Department paramedics responded but did not make any transports.

The circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting were not immediately available.

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as Antoine Lewis, of the 7800 block of South Morgan Street. An autopsy was pending.
