A robber who shot a 15-year-old boy outside Roosevelt High School on the Northwest Side hid his gun inside the backpack of a 10-year-old child as he fled, police say.
The robber was arrested and the gun recovered from the child's backpack, police said. Charges were pending against the suspect. Police said the 10-year-old was also questioned but was later released to his mother.
The 15-year-old, a student at the school, was at a bus stop in the 4700 block of North Kimball Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood when a "juvenile" shot him while trying to rob him around 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.
The boy was wounded in the thigh and taken to St. Francis Hospital in good condition, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The shooting occurred as classes were being let out at the school at 3436 W. Wilson Ave.
At least three others were wounded across the city Wednesday afternoon and evening, police said.
A 20-year-old man was shot in the 5600 block of South Green Street about 3:30 p.m. He was taken to Stroger Hospital with a graze wound to the chest. Someone fired 20 shots toward him, leaving shell casings strewn on the ground and grazing him once.
Police described the victim as uncooperative.
Later, about 9 p.m, two 16-year-olds were shot in the 4900 block of West Ferdinand Street in the Austin neighborhood. One of the victims was shot in the arm and the other in the leg, and both were taken to West Suburban Medical Center. Both are in good condition, police said.
