Joseph Brewer Jr. was taking a Sunday stroll to the home of his 5-month-old daughter, friends said, when gunfire broke out and killed the 16-year-old resident of the Trumbull Park neighborhood.
Police said Brewer, of the 10600 block of South Oglesby Avenue, was hit in the back with multiple gunshots about 2:50 p.m. Sunday down the street from his Southeast Side home. The teen was pronounced dead less than an hour later at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office. A 28-year-old was also shot in the same incident, but he was treated and released from a hospital.
Brewer’s brother Josh Stenson said Monday that he hurried toward the crime scene right after the gunfire.
"I just heard some shots and I came running," said Stenson, 20. "I was just hoping he wasn't (hit)."
Sunday morning before the shooting, a neighbor said she saw Brewer pushing his young daughter around the neighborhood in a stroller. Friends said Brewer visited his daughter every day. Many of his Facebook pictures featured him and the girl.
"He was a very family-oriented person," said Megan "Meme" Weekley, Brewer's neighbor and hairdresser. "He really wasn't a bad kid."
Friends said Brewer attended Washington High School, enjoyed playing video games and was a regular on the basketball court at open gym.
"He was the type of person that wasn't going to let anybody down," Stenson said. "We all made sure each other was all right."Copyright © 2015, RedEye
