A 15-year-old boy was shot dead Thursday night in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, officials said.
The boy was declared dead at 9:35 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The boy was identified as Marqui Thompson, of the 8400 block of South Aberdeen Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office, which did not identify him until late Friday afternoon. He was a freshman at Air Force Academy High School, 3630 S. Wells St., an official said.
Chicago Public Schools has a policy of not confirming whether homicide victims were students at a CPS school.
Someone shot the teen about 9 p.m. in the 8600 block of South Ashland Avenue, according to News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines, who was citing early reports.
Police said three males approached the boy, who was with three others, police said. At least one of those who approached the group said "Who dat?" to the group, and then opened fire, police said. All three fled on foot to a nearby Walgreens where police were called, according to police.
The 15-year-old was initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
