A 29-year-old man was fatally shot at a West Side gas station early this morning, and shootings on the North and South left two other people hurt, police said.
About 2:05 a.m., a 29-year-old man was shot at a gas station in the 300 block of South Cicero Avenue. Police called to the gas station for a person shot found the man with a gunshot wound to the upper chest, Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
The man was crossing the gas station's parking lot with some acquaintances when he was shot in the left side, said News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and died there later this morning, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. A bullet that struck him in the left chest lodged in the right side of his chest, and he was taken into surgery but was pronounced dead just after 5 a.m., according to police.
Police had initially said he was in serious condition. He was identified as Lionel Johnson of the 4300 block of West Jackson Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
At the crime scene, red police tape blocked the entrances to the gas station, which is at the southwest corner of Cicero and West Jackson Boulevard. Shortly after the ambulance left for Mount Sinai, two people standing on the north side of Jackson hugged as the group they were with stared at the crime scene. The group stepped into a van minutes later, leaving the street nearly empty except for the police officers guarding the scene and a short line at a 24-hour sandwich shop half a block north.
No suspects were in custody as of early this morning.

It was not immediately clear whether the man was a driver or passenger. His vehicle continued onto the expressway and traveled about 14 miles before exiting the Dan Ryan Expressway.
Paramedics met the man nearby and took him to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.
