A 16-year-old boy shot in the head early Friday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood was among at least four people wounded and one killed by gun violence in the city since 5:30 p.m. Thursday night.
The teen was inside an apartment in the 1400 block of South Spaulding in the Lawndale neighborhood on the South Side about 1:40 a.m. when he was shot following a "domestic incident" inside the home, police said.
The teen and another person fought and a third person intervened, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said. The third person, a 25-year-old man who lived in the same building, came back with a pistol and shot the boy in the head, Kubiak said.
Police are searching for the shooter.
The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. He was in surgery as of about 5:30 a.m., police said.
Both the shooter and the boy are in the same gang, Kubiak said. The shooting was witnessed by other children in the home at the time, police said.
Zemary Conners, 41, was driving east on Douglas Boulevard, stopped because she was "being nosy" and noticed 10 children lingering around the front of an apartment surrounded by police and an ambulance.
"I saw a little girl on the curb just wailing, nobody comforting her, just wailing," Conners said. "I tried to talk to the kids, to calm them down."
Conners said the children would have had to wait in police cars and thought it better that they wait in hers, so they wouldn't be further traumatized. The adults that came out of the apartment were all intoxicated, she said, along with one of the mothers who showed up to retrieve her children.
"I was concerned about the kids … y'all seen too much, y'all know too much, them kids are gonna need therapy," she said.
Seven of the children were taken away by adults. Three girls, who appeared in their teens, were taken away by police.
One of the three was crying when Conners arrived.
"I walked up to her, held her, and said 'Let's just pray.' "
A detective at the scene thanked Conners for her help before approaching neighboring buildings to interview potential witnesses.
Earlier, about 10:40 p.m. Thursday night, a 23-year-old man was killed in the Cragin neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side.
The man, identified as Jose Melendez of the 4800 block of West Cortland Street, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
The man was walking on Lamon Avenue north of Armitage Avenue when someone inside a dark SUV fired multiple shots, hitting him.
Nobody is in custody and Area North detectives are investigating, Greer said.
About 6:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the Belmont Central neighborhood, near the intersection of Altgeld Street and Mango Avenue. He was grazed in the stomach, police said.
A few minutes earlier, a 19-year-old was shot in the 2800 block of East 90th Street in the South Chicago neighborhood. He was hit in the thigh and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, police said.
A 27-year-old man was shot in the thigh about 5:30 p.m. in the 200 block of North St. Louis Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. Someone shot him as he stepped out of a car, police said.
