The armed robbery of a pizza deliveryman near the University of Illinois at Chicago campus prompted a SWAT team response to a potential barricade situation but no suspect was found, authorities said this morning.
Police responded to the area near West 14th and South Morgan streets around 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, believing that the robber had holed up in a building in the area. The search was called off about 12:40 a.m.
The incident began when a gunman robbed a pizza deliveryman on 14th Street, police said. After seeing his assailant run into a nearby building, the deliveryman called police, who alerted SWAT officers, police said.
A perimeter was been set up around the area, with a media staging area near Roosevelt Road and Morgan.
After about four hours, when no one was found in the area, the search was called off.
It's unclear whether the robbery suspect was ever inside the building.
The building was not on UIC property, a spokesman for the university said.
