Authorities: Elk Grove Village man drowned in North Branch

A man whose body was found in the North Branch of the Chicago River west of Lincoln Park Sunday evening drowned after becoming intoxicated, officials said.

The Chicago Police Department Marine Unit was called to the 1500 block of North Kingsbury Street about 5:30 p.m. to search for a possibly missing male whose clothes and shoes had been found in the area, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney.

Police found a body about 7:50 p.m.

The man was identified as Ryan McClelland, 30, of Chaffee Court in Elk Grove Village, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Following an autopsy Monday, the medical examiner's office determined McClelland died from drowning, with alcohol intoxication a secondary factor, in an accident.

The man had been reported missing Sunday, said Police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti. Detectives had not issued a missing person alert before the body was found.

Detectives are conducting a death investigation to determine the circumstances of the man's death.
