A 17-year-old boy who was shot in the head while traveling in a vehicle died this morning following the South Side attack, police said.
Pierce Curry, of the 9900 block of South Hoxie Avenue in the city's Jeffery Manor neighborhood, was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The 17-year-old was a rear passenger inside a vehicle that was southbound in the 6200 block of South State Street when someone inside another car pulled alongside his and opened fire, striking him twice in the head, according to police.
The motorist drove him to Saint Bernard's following the attack, according to police.
A Grand Central District police officer was writing a parking ticket when he heard multiple gunshots at 1:22 a.m. and called it in.
No one else in the victim's car was hurt and a detective on the scene said police found shattered glass and twelve shell casings in the middle of State Street
At 3:30 a.m., State Street remained blocked in both directions between 62nd and 63rd streets as police investigated. Train tracks run along the west side of State Street.
No one is in custody and Area Central detectives are investigating.
