A man trying to cross Lake Shore Drive near Montrose Harbor died after being hit by a taxi, police said.

The crash happened about 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive. Nobody else was injured, police said. Additional details about the man weren't immediately available.

A nurse who was northbound on the drive approached the scene after it happened but before the ambulance arrived. She and her husband stopped to see if she could help. She found a faint pulse but said the man's wounds were too extensive for him to be saved.

"There's nothing I could do, he was just profusely bleeding," she said. "He was two minutes away from death."

"Nobody else was injured and the people that were with me kept traffic moving so they could get gawkwers out and get an ambulance in," she said. "We left after that. There was nothing much I could do for this guy."

The dead man was warned by a friend not to try and cross the drive, police said.
