The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Chicago area as powerful storms make their way toward the city from the southwest suburbs.

A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect through 3 a.m.

Issued just before 10 p.m., the thunderstorm warning describes a line of storms moving northeast toward Chicago, bringing hail and winds up to 60 m.p.h.

Officials are warning the storms are powerful enough to damage trees, roofs and siding.
