Man killed in East Chatham shootout

A 23-year-old man was killed in a shootout this afternoon in the East Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.

The victim, whose identity was not being released pending family notification, was shot in the back during an exchange of gunfire with at least one other gunman, police said.

The shooting happened about 3:15 p.m. in the 8300 block of South Ellis Avenue, said police. The victim was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was later pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m., said police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

As of this evening, no one was in custody for the shooting.
