At least nine people were injured, one fatally, in shootings on the South and West sides on Tuesday, police said.
Among the injured were a 14-year-old boy critically wounded in a West Side shooting and four people hurt in a single shooting on the South Side, according to police.
The 14-year-old was shot about 10:25 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Drake Avenue, as he walked down the sidewalk, according to police.
He was hit in the lower back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
The four people were shot in the 3700 block of South Langley Avenue at 5:30 p.m. and managed to take themselves to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, police said.
The four were together at a park when someone they didn’t recognize approached on foot and fired at them, police said.
A 22-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, a 40-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his hip and side and a 31-year-old woman was shot in the arm.
A 30-year-old man was shot in the chin, neck and chest and was in serious condition. He was being transferred to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
A short time earlier at 4:45 p.m., a man was shot on the 3900 block of West Washington Boulevard in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney said.
The 30-year-old man was shot in the head and taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, where he later died, according to Sweeney.
The slain man was identified as Daniel Jones of the 4100 block of West Wilcox Street. He was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The victim was seated in a vehicle when an unidentified attacker came up on foot and fired into the vehicle, hitting him, said Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. The attacker then fled on foot, Estrada said.
The shooting is believed to be gang-related, Estrada said.
In other shootings:
• About 9:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the 100 block of East 42nd Street. The man was standing on the street when some opened fire and fled in a white minivan, police said.
The 22-year-old was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger, where he was listed in critical condition.
• A 23-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the head in the 5400 block of West Walton Street about 10:15 p.m. The man was standing in an alley when someone fired from the sidewalk, police said.
The man's condition was stabilized.
Police said the shooter fled in a light-colored sedan.
• About 2:20 p.m. a 17-year-old boy was shot on the 6800 block of South Paulina Street, said Sweeney. The boy was shot in the buttocks and was taken to an area hospital where his condition had stabilized.
• Someone shot a 25-year-old man in the chest during a possible drive-by at 12:19 p.m. in the 9800 block of South Avenue J in the East Side neighborhood, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.
Chicago Fire Department officials said the victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.
