A man in his 20s died in a gun battle with several others in an alley in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
Grand Crossing District officers and paramedics found Travon Watkins, 23, in the 6800 block of South Calumet Avenue at about 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, police said, citing preliminary information.
Watkins, of the 6900 block of South Martin Luther King Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
A witness told police that Watkins had exchanged gunfire with several men, according to police. Officers found a TEC-9 pistol underneath Watkins' body and 20 to 30 shell casings strewn around the area, authorities said.
Police said Watkins had past gang ties.
No arrests had been made as Area Central detectives continued their investigation.
