Burglars were able to get into a Lincoln Park-area bicycle shop and make off with about 20 high-end bicycles late Tuesday evening, police said.

The incident happened between 9 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the Running Away Multisport, 2219 N. Clybourn Ave. in the Sheffield Neighbors neighborhood, police said. According to its website the store specializes in high-end road cycles for triathlon use, officials said.

Police said that a burglar or burglars managed to cut through a lock in a metal gate and then smashed through two glass doors behind the gates leading to the store.

Once inside the store, the burglar or burglars were able to collect about 20 of the high-speed road bicycles, police said. Officials said the bicycles were well into the thousands of dollars in value.

The culprits took the bicycles through a rear door where a rental box truck was waiting, police said.

Store employees discovered the bikes had been stolen when they arrived to open the store at about 7 a.m., police said.

An employee at the store declined comment.
