Police are searching for a Mercedes they believe was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a 77-year-old man in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

The victim was identified as Arthur Johnson, 77, of Chicago. He was pronounced dead at 7:56 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Johnson was in the 8300 block of South Racine Avenue when a dark-colored, two-door Mercedes C230 hit him and fled the scene at 7 a.m., according to a community alert issued by police. The car model was 2002 to 2005.

The Mercedes sustained damage to its passenger-side windshield and driver-side hood, the alert said.
