The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and the Ravinia Festival Association announced Thursday that they have signed a five-year contract extending the summer residency of the orchestra through summer 2018.
The new contract calls for six weeks of residency in the summers of 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. James Conlon’s contract as Ravinia music director extends through the summer of 2014.
The CSO has been in summer residence at Ravinia continuously since 1936. The orchestra first performed in Ravinia Park’s second season in November 1905 and began appearing with some regularity through August 1931, when it served as the orchestra for Ravinia Opera. The CSO helped to inaugurate the first season under the Ravinia Festival banner in August 1936.
