A 46-year-old man is in custody after beating a woman, hitting her young son when he tried to intervene and throwing an 18-month-old girl out a vehicle window early this morning, according to police.

About 2:40 a.m., the man began hitting a 23-year-old woman inside a vehicle near the intersection of East 75th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue, Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said. Police described the assault as domestic in nature.

When the woman's 7-year-old son tried to intervene, the suspect hit him as well, Gaines said. The man then threw an 18-month-old girl out a window of the vehicle, Gaines said.

The girl was hit by the vehicle as the driver fled, according to police.

Police took the suspect into custody a sort time later, Gaines said. Both children were taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, Gaines said.
