Firefighters found a dead man burned beyond recognition in a burning trash can about 9 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.
Firefighters had cleared the scene, in the west alley of the 3100 block of North Central Park Avenue, by about 10:15 p.m.
Police remained in the neighborhood interviewing nearby residents and taped off the alley where the body was found.
The Cook County medical examiner's office was notified of the death but didn't have any other details.
Police have opened a death investigation, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. The body was found in some sort of garbage can, he said.
The body, an adult man, was burned beyond recognition, a fire department spokesman said.
