The three minute trailer for the upcoming NBC drama “Chicago Fire” features firefighters battling flames in a collapsing building, a firefighter receiving a “Pulp Fiction”-like needle through the chest, and two people sucking face in the shower, but it’s the unexpected cameo by Mayor Rahm Emanuel that most caught my attention.
It’s not every day you see the Mayor of Chicago in a prime time TV series. The ex-governor of Illinois? Sure. But not the Mayor.
Emanuel – who plays himself – nods at a firefighter as he walks toward him during the scene and then shakes his hand. Asked about it in March, Emanuel told NBC "It's easier being mayor than playing mayor. I told them I’d do it under one condition: the TV show is making an investment to the firefighter's widow and orphans fund."
The series from producer Dick Wolf revolves around the men and women of Chicago Firehouse 51. The show, which is filmed in Chicago, is scheduled to air Wednesdays beginning in the fall.
Outside the ring: Billy Corgan watched his Resistance Pro wrestling event from the crowd Friday at Teamster Auditorium. The Smashing Pumpkins rocker didn’t get involved in any of the matches or storylines, but it looked to me like he was about to at one point in the night when he yelled “No” and stomped his foot. It turned out that Corgan was just frustrated with a staff member for playing a wrestler’s theme music at the wrong time. Corgan was spotted Saturday at N9NE Steakhouse and The Pump Room in the Public Chicago hotel.
Big ups: The Chicago Public School students who provided the illustrations for Kerry Wood’s upcoming children’s book, “All You Can Be: Learning & Growing Through Sports,” will attend the Cubs game at Wrigley Field May 30 and meet the Cubs pitcher. Wood, who asked students to draw pictures that best depicted their future goals, will sign copies of the book May 29 at Barnes & Noble in Old Orchard Center and May 30 at the Cubs Store on Clark and Addison.
On the record: "Sometimes when you work with a director you know you not only may never see him again, sometimes you hope you never seen him again. And that goes for the director as well. They can't wait for you to leave. They drive you to the airport to make sure you leave. That happens. With Wes, I've never gotten a ride to the airport." - Actor and Wilmette native Billy Murray talks about his “Moonrise Kingdom” director, Wes Anderson, during a press conference at Cannes.
