A suspect in custody for the shooting death of a woman at a Gold Coast hotel had left his cell phone in the room, police say.
Authorities arrested the 28-year-old man late Tuesday night at his home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood for the slaying of Brianna Gardner, 22, of Dallas, Texas, according to Chicago police.
Gardner was found around 10 a.m. Monday in a room of the Whitehall Hotel in the 100 block of East Delaware Place. One guest staying near the victim's seventh-floor room told police he heard what sounded like a gunshot about 3:30 a.m., but police were not immediately notified, authorities said.
Hours later, a cleaning crew entered the woman's room and found her dead, authorities said.
Two cell phones were found in the room, one belonging to Gardner and the other to the suspect, sources said.
Gardner was shot in the head and her death was ruled a homicide, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The suspect, who has previous convictions for residential burglary and aggravated battery, was out on parole for a 2007 drug conviction, according to state records.
No charges had been filed as of this morning.
