Chicago-area fans of the Stratford Festival in Canada have a new and vastly more convenient way to fly to the popular theatrical destination. On June 14, American Eagle, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, will begin non-stop service from Chicago's O'Hare Airport to the airport in Kitchener, Ontario. There's a choice of afternoon or evening departures.
Kitchener is just 35-40 minutes from Stratford, bypassing the need to fly through Toronto. Fares vary, of course: A recent search for July tickets yielded a round-trip fare of about $300.
Meanwhile, closer to home, Metra has retimed its Saturday evening service on the Union Pacific North Line to include a new, 11 p.m. departure to Ravenswood, Rogers Park and on up to Waukegan. Overall, Metra is far from arts friendly, but this one train, re-timed due to customer requests, is at least a start. Those going, say, to "South Pacific" now won't have to wait until 12:35 a.m. to go home.
