The nominees for the 2013 Equity Jeff Awards are...

The all-volunteer Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee released its slate of nominations Wednesday for the Equity wing of its long-running recognition program honoring what it sees as the best in Chicago theater, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater emerged as the most honored theater of the year.

Chicago Shakespeare scored a total 19 Jeff nominations, with eight nominations going to Gary Griffin's hit production of "Sunday in the Park With George."  The much smaller Porchlight Music Theatre also was held in high esteem by the Jeff Committee, with Michael Weber's production of "Pal Joey" scoring an unexpected six nominations.

Other productions with significant hauls of nominations include the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire's production of "South Pacific," the American Theater Company production of "columbinus," the Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of "Good People," Court Theatre's "James Joyce's "The Dead,'" and the Lookingglass Theatre Company's revival of Mary Zimmerman's "Metamorphoses."

As is often the case, there was significant divergence from the shows most admired by Chicago's critics. Robert Falls' Goodman Theatre production of "Measure for Measure" scored only a single nomination for scenic design (Walt Spangler) and, in a generally lousy year for the Goodman, there was no nod for Diane Lane nor her director, David Cromer, for "Sweet Bird of Youth."

Although its actress, Chaon Cross, was nominated, Court Theatre's production of "Proof" was not nominated for best production, and its director, Charles Newell, was snubbed.

Musicals at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora were not judged, on the grounds that it is too far from Chicago.  That made life a lot easier for the Marriott and Drury Lane Theatres, with the former doing especially well this year, as did TimeLine Theatre, which produced several nominated shows.

Intriguingly, playwright Neil LaBute was nominated for the revision of his own play in the "best adaptation" catagory, and Larry Yando was nominated for a role he's been doing for years: Ebenezer Scrooge in the Goodman Theatre's long-running holiday production of "A CHristmas Carol."

At least in terms of Jeff nominations, Yando gets only better with age.
