A man died when he tried to cross the tracks at the California station on the Blue Line and came into contact with the third rail, according to police and the transit agency.

The incident happened about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday on the southbound tracks of the station at 2211 N. California Ave., according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski.

The man's name had not been released, pending notification of family. He was in his 30s, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Witnesses told police the man was trying to cross from one platform to the other and accidentally touched the third rail, a Shakespeare District police lieutenant said. He was dead on the scene, the lieutenant said.

"He jumped on the tracks and that was it," Sgt. Thomas Hussey said.
