An elderly woman has died after she was struck by a tree branch that fell in Cantigny Park last week, officials said today.

Mildred Hetmanski, 83, of Crete, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital of multiple injuries, officials with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office she was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. Tuesday. An autopsy conducted today ruled her death an accident.

Hetmanski was one of three injured on June 8 when a branch fell from one of the oldest and largest trees near the McCormick Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

Two were taken to the hospital and the third refused treatment, according to officials with the McCormick Foundation. The name and condition of the second victim taken to the hospital has not been released by the foundation or the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

“We offer our condolences and our prayers to Mrs. Hetmanski’s family,” David Hiller, president and CEO of the McCormick Foundation, said in a statement.

The branch fell from a Bur Oak tree, which is more than 300 years old, said foundation spokesman Phil Zepeda.  The limb that fell was probably 80 to 100 feet long.

The area remains roped off and the fate of the tree is still undetermined, Zepeda said.
