A 77-year-old woman was mortally injured when she and her husband were struck by a car slowly backing out of a Palatine driveway near their home, police said tonight.
Jieru Chen and her husband were walking on the 400 block of North Hicks Road about noon Wednesday when a 42-year-old woman was slowly backing her 1998 Chevrolet Malibu out of a private driveway at an apartment complex, according to a Palatine police news release.
The driver said she did not see anyone or feel the car strike anything, but when she looked to her left she saw the man and woman, both 77, lying on the ground outside the driver's side door, police said.
While the victim's husband attended to his wife, the driver called 911 and remained on scene. Preliminary information indicates Chen had hit her head on the pavement when she fell while moving out of the way of the car or when she was bumped into by the vehicle at a very slow speed, police said.
Palatine Fire Department personnel took Chen to Northwest Community Hospital, and she later was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital -- where she succumbed to her injuries at 11:33 a.m. today.
The incident is under investigation by the Palatine Police Technical Accident Reconstruction Unit, and no citation information was immediately released.
An autopsy for Chen, of the 400 block of Baldwin Street in Palatine, is expected to be performed Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
