A man was shot and critically injured Saturday evening after two armed attackers entered a Gage Park apartment looking for someone else, police said.

About 7 p.m., two assailants entered a basement apartment in the 5400 block of South Sawyer Avenue, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

A struggle broke out as the assailants sought out a resident, who was one of several people inside at the time.

A 53-year-old man intervened in the struggle, and one of the assailants fired shots, striking him three times in the stomach, police said.

The attackers then fled southbound on Sawyer, police said.

Paramedics rushed the man to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police had no suspects in custody as of early this morning and did immediately comment on what may have prompted the attack.
